On January 8, 2025, a terrorist group carried out an attack against an advanced position of the Defense and Security Forces (FDS) in the three-border zone between Benin-Burkina Faso-Niger (“Triple Point”) in Banikoara (Alibori Department). At least 28 soldiers were reportedly killed during this attack, the deadliest Benin has ever experienced.
This attack, which lasted from 4 PM to midnight, comes after two weeks of calm in the north of the country, reminding of the persistent terrorist threat. It holds significant importance as it targets a key site of the anti-terrorist operation “Mirador”. This site, a soldier deployment base meant to be fortified, constitutes a strategic position for Benin. By striking this base, the attackers thus weaken the armed forces’ operational and deployment capabilities.
Despite mobilization efforts and the response of Beninese armed forces, they are struggling to regain initiative in the North, while terrorist armed groups seem to have gained in operational capabilities.
