On February 6, 2025, clashes broke out in Doubasso (Northern Côte d’Ivoire) between Ivorian and Malian dozos. The conflict originated when Ivorian dozos seized gold mining equipment belonging to Malians.
In border areas, violence has been exacerbated by land disputes, particularly around the Malian village of Gofien, and by illegal mining operations. In retaliation, Malian dozos have burned down Ivorian dozos’ encampments.
The role of dozos in securing mining sites, without coordination with state authorities, constitutes a risk factor that promotes the escalation of violence. At this stage, there are no mechanisms for regulating gold mining or managing conflicts that would help reduce tensions.
