An Unprecedented Wave of Attacks
The Far North region of Cameroon is going through a particularly dark period. Between October 12 and 17, 2024, the region has witnessed a series of brutal attacks attributed to Boko Haram, plunging local populations into a climate of fear and insecurity.
Civilians Under Fire
The departments of Mayo-Sava, Mayo-Tsanaga, and Logone-and-Chari are the most affected. Terrorists systematically target civilians, including:
- Farmers
- Motorcycle taxi drivers
- Shepherds
- Fishermen
- Students
The toll is heavy: at least five people have lost their lives under tragic circumstances, falling victim to assaults and kidnappings.
An Escalating Threat
Between September 28 and October 11, 2024, no less than 27 incidents were recorded. This multiplication of attacks demonstrates an alarming escalation of violence in the region.
Defense and Security Forces’ Resistance
The Defense and Security Forces (DSF) are not remaining idle in the face of this threat. Notable successes include:
- Repelling an offensive on the Oupaï – Mtskar axis on October 13
- Countering an attack in Gansé on October 17
Persistent Challenges
Despite these occasional successes, the situation reveals current limitations in the security apparatus:
- Attack frequency remains high
- Short-term deterrence capacity is insufficient
- Risk levels remain critical in several areas
Travel Advisory
⚠️ Maximum vigilance recommended for all travel in the region. The following areas are particularly sensitive:
- Mayo-Sava
- Mayo-Tsanaga
- Logone-and-Chari
Conclusion
The security situation in Far North Cameroon remains concerning. Despite security forces’ efforts, the terrorist threat persists and adapts, requiring increased vigilance and enhanced protection measures for local populations.
